Here’s what the food critics say

When you think of fine dining venues you tend to think of trendy town centre eateries, village pubs and the like.

You don’t think of business parks just off the motorway between Winnersh and Reading.

But, it turns out, that’s a big mistake.

Caprice is the Restaurant at the new Holiday Inn in IQ Winnersh and it’s a real treat.

I arrived with a note of scepticism. An uninspiring drive down the A329(M) isn’t the sort of thing that usually works up an appetite.

But that scepticism was banished as soon as I stepped into the hotel’s lobby and went on to the restaurant.

The décor and ambience are spot on. Seated at a window table looking out at some of the clever modern architecture and landscaping at the new-look IQ Winnersh, aka Winnersh Triangle, with a clear view to a beautiful sunset,

I quickly forgot that I was in a hotel.

One thing that is worth pointing out quickly is that the Holiday Inn in Winnersh is a franchise. It means the owner has free rein to do what he likes as regards food and Caprice, one of several eateries in the hotel, is completely independent.

It’s not like restaurants in other chain hotels where you can get the same meals in Dundee as you can in Torquay.

Plenty of the meals on the a la carte menu feature local produce and there is even a table d’hôte menu put together daily by one of the chefs.

The menu overwhelmed me with pleasant dilemmas but I eventually managed to settle for baked goats cheese with pickled beetroot and a pepper dressing (£5.95) to start while my girlfriend, Alice, had a salad of scallops and crayfish with watercress and curry cream (£6.50).

The first thing to hit me about my dish when it arrived was how striking it looked. The chalky white cheese sat on a few green leaves and slices of purple beetroot with yellow dressing drizzled around the plate.

The cheese, Rosary Ash, is made by producer Chris Moody in Wiltshire, was light but tangy and went really well with the dill in the salad.

My girlfriend said the seafood salad tasted fresh and was appetising while the scallops were perfectly cooked.

My main was braised shoulder of lamb with pan-fried sweetbreads, fondant potatoes and stuffed courgettes (£17.25) while Alice had fillet of beef with Savoy cabbage, Parma ham and chateau potatoes (£22.95).

My lamb was flaked and rolled with what tasted like onion, rosemary and garlic and served with a rich jus. My only reservation was that some of the garlic was burnt, but it wasn’t altogether unpleasant.

The sweetbreads worked perfectly and the courgettes, stuffed with a tangy salsa, lifted the meal and refreshed the palate.

My girlfriend is on a diet and, as is occasionally the case, it worked in my favour as I was able to finish of the remains of her tender, moist steak and a tiny bit of the crispy, salty Parma ham.

Alice said the cabbage was perfectly cooked and the steak had come exactly how she had ordered it. It was also a good-sized piece of meat which is often not what you get when you order a fillet.

At the waiter’s well-judged recommendation, we both enjoyed a glass of Los Romeros Malbec from Chile (£15.95 per bottle) which was fruity and spicy and suited the red meats well.

Dessert for me was a crème brûlée with candied oranges (£5.50) and Alice had chocolate terrine with Kirsch cherries (£5.75).

My brûlée had a good, thick crunchy topping with a light creamy pudding beneath and came with a shortbread biscuit made by the hotel’s patisserie chef as well as two slices of candied orange which were sticky and decadent.

Alice’s pudding looked huge but was actually quite light and came with a stack of the booze-soaked cherries. The dish was good enough to push the diet to the back of her mind and I was left with just a tiny morsel to enjoy.

I can heartily recommend that you put your preconceptions about hotel restaurants to one side to pay a visit to Caprice. It couldn’t be easier – there are few other eateries which have their own train station.

Well, it’s actually Winnersh Triangle station but it is directly across the bridge that stands outside the hotel and  after 5pm no-one else is using it.

The journey to Winnersh costs less than £2 from Reading and could make the evening out feel like a little adventure. Recommended.

 It’s not only the fine dining and exquisite cuisine at the Caprice – you will be charmed by the European legend Razvigor Popov’s repertoire. Back by popular demand, he will entertain guests daily from 29^th May till 14^th June during lunch and dinner service. The Bulgarian pianist is famous not only for his brilliant performances, but he is an awarded composer and lyricist as well. Whether for a quick business lunch or a relaxing drink in the evening the visitors can enjoy the ambience and delightful music.

The Caprice Restaurant & Terrace, within Reading’s newest 4 star hotel, is ideally placed just off Jct 10 of the M4. It is conveniently located next to the Winnersh Triangle Train Station (only 6 minutes by train from Reading City center) and within close proximity to Bracknell and Wokingham.

 Head Chef, Stuart Weeks and his team, will surprise you with their delightful creations including Baked Goats Cheese with Pickled Beetroot and Pepper Dressing, or Confit of Salad of Scallops and Crayfish with Watercress and Curry Cream to start with, and Braised Shoulder of Lamb, Pan fried Sweetbreads, Fondant Potato and Stuffed Courgettes or Twice Baked Cashel Blue Soufflé with Green Beans, Walnut and Tomato Salad to name but a few.

 Most importantly you must leave space for the mouthwatering zero calorie deserts – choose from the Chocolate Terrine with Kirsch Cherries or the Iced Parfait with Honey and Walnut Praline or several other of the exceptional homemade creations.

The Caprice Table D’Hote Menu is available for £ 16.95 for a 2 course or  £ 20.95 for a 3 course meal

If you prefer something a bit more informal, the stunning Monty’s Lounge & Bar with its comfortable seating and floor to ceiling windows is ideal. You can chose from a selection of ‘ Light Bites’; a wide selection of quality meals including Greek or Caeser Salad; Battered Haddock and Chips, Rump Steak with Peppercorn Sauce or the very popular Indian Specialties of the Day.

If you are after a quick value for money Breakfast or Lunch, try the Express Lunch Menu  or the Daily Specials with prices from just £ 3.25 served in Monty’s Lounge Bar by an attentive team. The Afternoon High Tea is also highly recommended.
